Historically, when is grain corn planted in Manitoba?

Using MASC seeding data from 2008 to 2012 , where data is for final insured crop in the ground, we can see when grain corn acres have typically been planted in Manitoba.

Figure 1- Percent of grain corn acres seeded per month in Manitoba (2008 – 2012) illustrates when grain corn acres were planted in the months of April, May and June.  The 5-year average shows that majority of acres were planted in May (81%), followed by April (17%) and June (2%).   In early years like 2012, we saw 39% (106, 000) of acres planted in April.  However, 3 out of 5 years (2011, 2009 and 2008), majority of grain corn acres were planted in May.  There are not many acres planted in June as AgriInsurance seeding deadlines are at the end of May, with a few exceptions of insurance areas or extended seeding deadlines.

For information on grain corn seeding deadlines, grain corn insurance areas, dollar values and any restrictions that may apply to crop coverage for the 2013 season, check with your local MASC agent or visit MASC’s website: http://www.masc.mb.ca/masc.nsf/crop_summaries.html
