With the hot dry weather we are seeing Two Spotted spider mites start to show up in soybean fields. If you are concerned that you should be spraying you would first scout the headlands of the soybeans and look for symptoms that the mites are present. You want to watch for yellow stippling on the leaves starting on the lower leaves and moving up the plant. The mites are small (about0 0.4 mm), so you have to look hard to see them. They have two spots on the abdomen hence the name. These mites will feed on the underside of the leaf so turn it over and use a magnification glass if necessary. Spraying borders is an option if mites are restricted to field edges however you should also check into the field to see how far the mites are present to see if spraying the entire field is justified.
